Letter from Mayor Darlene Gee to the Community

As the Mayor of our community, I am saddened and outraged at the murder of George Floyd and so many others who have been the victims of racial injustice.

It is easy to understand the anger and frustration being expressed throughout our nation.

As a community, we uphold everyone’s rights to peaceful protest and the exercise of First Amendment rights.

However, we do not condone the senseless destruction and looting that has been seen throughout the Bay Area over the last week.

To help maintain calm and public safety, the City has invoked a curfew from 8pm until 5am until further notice.  And we will continue to utilize this measure for public safety as long as necessary.

We appreciate everyone’s compliance and support for protecting Orinda.

I also want to reiterate a resolution our City Council made in 2019 declaring that Orinda is a community that welcomes everyone; values diversity and expects everyone to be treated with respect and dignity.

As the City leadership we will continue to do everything possible to be a community we can all take pride in.

Additionally, I want to thank our residents for their continued commitment to adhering to the best new habits and health orders for containing the spread of the coronavirus.  Together we are making a difference and progress toward a renewed future.
